Employer’s Market vs. Employee’s Market

There is a lot to be said about today’s job market, with the volatility of pending layoffs everyday. I personally feel it runs parrallel with the housing market, as it is a buyers market now and that means negotiation because the seller needs to either buy another home and needs the money or they cannot make the payments and will provide more leeway with price.

When it comes to the Employer vs. Employee, it’s definitely the employer who wins today, so therefore, put up or shut up! The way people are treated is horrendous, but the employers know they have a job where the money and benefits are good and therefore, they can change the rules at a moments notice and you have no say. They can be demeaning and revengeful, and if you go to HR, they will just tell you how lucky you are to have a job. I am positive that, that kind of behavior will turn around and bite them in the butt one day and soon. They will find themselves scrambling for employees and the pickings will be slim, there will be more job availability and people will not tolerate that behavior for long once they do get hired, and therefore there will be a huge turnaround, which leads to poor customer service because of inexperience and profitability will fall by the wayside. It really is so pathetic. Employees need to be treated fairly at all times regardless of the economic situation. Employees are tools and you need to care for them or they will fall apart. I hate hearing they feel they can put the fear of losing your job in your face everyday. I am listening to so many stories of people looking to take a cut in pay just to be happy, but isn’t that what life is about, being happy? Follow your bliss, focus on what you want, not on what you don’t.

I think the Employer’s Market is b.s and I cannot wait to see it flip on its rear! I’ve seen job postings for minimum wage positions (cashiers, cleaners, fast food cooks, etc…) demanding potential employees have post-secondary educations. Why?! I’ve worked in many fields without so much as my grade 12…why does my EXPERIENCE count for nothing? I now have my grade 12, and it no longer matters as it’s not a college/university degree. Suddenly I’m under-educated and under-qualified for jobs I already have on my resume.

On the flip side: I know a great many people who have post-secondary degrees and face great difficulty in obtaining employment. “No experience. Your placement doesn’t count, that’s just School Stuff. This is The Real World.” At best, the education these graduates went into debt for is now giving them “an edge” for jobs entirely unrelated to their field. (Making “uneducated” people like me think “Why bother going for a Bachelor’s in Social Work if it’s just going to get me into McDonald’s? At least it’s one less debt to worry about.”

There are also people who were laid off during the recession now facing drawn-out unemployment because they are too old…this is addressed as “over-qualified.”

So…we have those who are lacking education but have experience getting turned down.

Those with education but no experience get turned down.

Those with education and experience get turned down.

Who the hell is getting all the jobs??? People with luck and people with connections.

As you said, the Employer’s are definitely abusing their side of the Market beyond belief. It’s SO difficult to get an interview, get a second interview, get the job, and then keeping the job+suffering abuse. I’m surprised I haven’t been hearing about suicide rates skyrocketing.

Amanda, I want to share with you my background, which is essentially as an Executive Assistant in the Telecom world. Nothing special, no degree, however, I perservered and managed to stay employed my entire career and I’m 49 now. I am grateful. Your point is dead on, but don’t focus on that, what I want you to focus on is what you desire for yourself. Have the faith no matter what and go after it. I just noticed the past week, I’ve been getting a lot of emails from career builder with decent job opportunities. Keep applying and you will get results. In these horrible economic times, we are all suffering and it sucks, yes, but stay focused. I will also offer to you a course I took in internet marketing, I now have 19 websites, some of which I’ll dump shortly, but that’s okay, you will have good/bad and very good ones. Money potential is up to you check it out, Brian Johnson Commission Ritual Brian is a real person, with excellent success, I’m one of his worst students, only because I’m not mad enough at myself to move harder, but I have some ideas that I will be taking a stab at. Internet marketing is creative, hard work in the beginning, and it get’s easier as you go along as long as you know who is BSing and who isn’t. Brian is NO BSer, he is very successful and always recreating the wheel and in this business you have to. It’s the best $97 I ever spent. It’s up to you, but I’m happy because I learned some excellent skills too. Amazing. Good luck, please keep me posted. Either way, if it is to be, it’s up to me! :)
